Steve Brewer's latest just may be one of his best. Set in Redding, California and its outlying rural areas, the novel features an underachieving protagonist, Eric Newlin, who works for his father-in-law and lives in a loveless marriage. One evening, a miraculous escape from death prompts Newlin to believe his life will take a new turn. It does, but not in the way he expects. "Calabama" is imbued with Brewer's trademark mix of gritty action and dark humor, with the author's usual deft pacing and execution.I've read sixteen of Steve Brewer's novels, and there isn't a dud among them. He's written for a living since the age of eighteen, getting a degree in journalism while working as a journalist. In a key way, he brings a journalist's sensibilities to his fiction: The story is king, and you won't find him resorting to "stupid writer tricks" to impress you with his command of the language.
I think author Eric Beetner says it best regarding Mr. Brewer's clean style and storytelling prowess. In an interview, he was asked, "Which author should be much better known?"
He answered, "My go-to for this is always Steve Brewer. He's as good as Elmore Leonard with a fraction of the accolades."
I agree. The only thing I find disagreeable about Steve Brewer is that he still has a full head of hair. We're about the same age, after all. The gall.

This was the last of the 3 Steve Brewer books I recently purchased. The others being "Lost Vegas" and "The Big Wink". Both were tremendous and "Calabama" did not disappoint. The only difference is that this one was told from the 1st person POV. Brewer's trademark humor is again on display, albeit, a more satirical, wise-cracking style. The story and the way it is told had me thinking of Donald Westlake, for sure, especially Westlake's "The Ax", which should be considered a very shining endorsement. Overall, it was a great read and I highly recommend it.
I guess it's common in many books to see how far you can up the body count by the end of the book and unfortunately this follows that path. I really enjoyed reading Steve's Bubba Mabry series because of their well thought out mysteries and humor and so I thought I would try one of his other books. I decided on Calabama since I'm somewhat familiar this part of California where the book takes place. I thought the story line and characters were great but again, I could have done without the bodies piling up.
I have read every one of Steve Brewer's novels and have enjoyed them all. Calabama offers new characters and a new setting, but, like the author's previous work, entertains the reader in an Elmore Leonardesque fashion that makes one wonder what the author does in his spare time. How does he know about the places he writes about; and who does he model his characters on? Like in many of his novels, the main character in Calabama is flawed, stumbling his way through life, absent any semblance of discipline, and seemingly unconcerned with how many laws and mores he violates. Yet you can't help but care about the guy and hope he finds success and happiness in the end.
I recommend Steve Brewer's work to anyone who wants to have fun with their reading, who takes pleasure in wonderfully descriptive writing, and who wants to get hooked on the work of a prolific author.
Keep them coming, Steve.
